Umpqua Soil and Water Conservation District welcomes you to visit two Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board Small Grant Projects near Reedsport, Oregon.

Project 1: This project is a rainwater management project with a livestock heavy use area as part of the project. The barn is quite large and when it rains a large volume of water pours off of the roof onto the ground. Rather than having this rainwater create a muddy situation around the barn where the livestock are located, the rainwater will now be routed off the rooftop through gutters and downspouts, into drainage pipe and piped to an existing drainage channel near the producer's pasture. Several years ago, the producer constructed a 24'x84' livestock heavy use area with the producer's own funds, and now, with the assistance of the small grant program, has increased the size of the heavy use area an additional 24'x64' which brings the livestock heavy use area up to a total of 124'.

Project 2: This project is a livestock exclusion fencing system with several elk jump structures built into it to provide wildlife corridor accesses for the local elk herd while maintaining livestock in the field and, at the same time, preventing livestock from entering the drainage channels that empty into Providence Creek and the local estuary system.

Both of these Agriculture Water Quality projects help to reduce sediment and nutrients from getting into Providence Creek and the Lower Umpqua River Estuary.

Both projects are in close proximity to one another. We'll park at Project 1, view the project and then walk a short distance to Project 2.

No restroom facilities are available.

You will be visiting locations with livestock. Additionally, this is a rain or shine event, please dress and plan accordingly. Project 1 can be mostly viewed from inside of the barn.

Parking will be on grass.

Hope to see you there!
